OTTUMWA — James L. Wood, 75, of 205 W. Keota St., died at 12:11 a.m. May 23, 2015, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center. He was born April 25, 1940, in Ottumwa to Delbert and Effie Elaine Ashmead Wood. He married Peggy Rupe October 29, 1958. She preceded him in death August 7, 2008. A resident of Ottumwa most of his life, James served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1958-1977, having served two tours in Vietnam and two in Okinawa, Japan. He had worked for McCurdy Seed in Fremont and for two years as a truck driver, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy. Surviving are three sons, Ronald (Janice) Wood, Darrin (Lisa) Wood, both of Ottumwa, and Jimmy (Cheryl) Wood of Knoxville; a daughter, Wanda (Rick) Mattingley of Ottumwa; 10 grandchildren, April Wood, Amanda Argueta, Aaron Wood, Eric Janes, Erin Small, Shari Wood, Caleb Wood, Joshua Wood, Levi Wood and Justin Wood; three step-grandchildren, Sarah Mattingley, Joe Mattingley and Trevor Baker; 10 great-grandchildren; five step-great grandchildren; four sisters, Judith (Jack) Rupe of California, Nancy (Fred) Long, Debbie (Bob) Quick and Jackie Siebert, all of Ottumwa; an uncle, Steve (Pat) Canny of Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Delayne Adamson; and a brother, Tom Wood. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with his son, Jimmy Wood officiating. Burial will be in Mars Hill Cemetery. Military services will be accorded. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. |
