David Berg Allison

David Allison

Greenfield Center, NY - David Berg Allison, 81, passed away from Covid-19 complications on January 12, 2022, in the Saratoga Springs, NY hospital. He was born in the Ottumwa, IA hospital on December 27, 1940, to Berg Edgar Allison and Louise Rosalee Overturf-Allison-Mitchell.

Dave was a 1959 graduate of Ottumwa High School. He continued his education at Iowa State University, completing a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering with undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering and Math. Upon graduation he accepted an appointment as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. Dave spent 24 years on active duty serving in the Dominican Republic, Viet Nam, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Ft. Bragg, NC, Ft Campbell, KY, Ft. Bliss, TX, Ft Sill, OK, Ft. Belvoir, VA, Medford, OR and Ames, IA. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1988.

Dave was married to Joy Wise for 63 years. He is survived by Joy, son Jon David Allison, MD of Phoenix, AZ and Florissant CO, a daughter Stefanie Lyn Allison, DO of Saratoga Springs, NY, and grandsons Graham Anderson Allison and Graydon David Allison of Saratoga Springs. A brother, Charles Robert Allison of Des Moines, IA and sister Ann Louise Allison Dorr of Des Moines, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son Jeffery Robert Allison.

Before relocating to NY he was the Treasurer and a choir member at First Lutheran Church in Ottumwa, IA. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in both Iowa and Virginia.Dave is remembered by the family for his keen ability to build or fix anything and his children were amazed at his ability to solve seemingly impossible mathematical problems over the phone.

He was an avid reader and known for being able to hold a complex conversation on a wide range of topics. In his later years his two grandsons were a source of joy, and he would be seen at their many sporting events when his health would allow.

Despite difficulty with walking, he never complained or shied away from sitting in a chair and playing “kickball” with his oldest grandson.

Dave was cremated in NY, due to Covid-19, and will be returned to Iowa for his final resting place with local service arrangements pending.
