Dear friends:

I’m now a retired person living in Oviedo!  Last weekend Carola and I took a U-Haul to Oviedo with the last of my stuff from the garage apartment behind our old house in Jacksonville.  I’ve been renting the apartment from the new owners.  We sold the house about a year ago--at the peak of housing prices here—yeah!  Two months ago the first Social Security check came.  Wow, dude, you are old!  Last month we bought a new Toyota Tacoma SR-5 for all the projects we have planned.  Carola is now driving the ’05 Camry that we bought after the Grand Canyon trip last summer.

We’re in the house I built about 30 years ago on a wooded acre outside of Oviedo (an Orlando suburb).  It’s about a thousand square feet, and although well laid out and very energy efficient, it is cramped.  However, Carola’s oldest daughter Andrea will be moving into Carola and Ransford’s big 1920’s Sears house on Magnolia Street (also Oviedo) about two miles away.  She may be sharing the house with Jessica and her daughter Phoenix.  The house is largely original—no heat, no A/C, no insulation (actually, no water heater right now), so there are several projects waiting for me there!  Justine, Mark, and four more grand children are also in Oviedo--about three miles away from us.

We still have the cabin near Burnsville, NC.  It’s north of Asheville, close to the Tennessee border—about half an hour from the Blue Ridge Parkway and two or three spots to get onto the Appalachian Trail.  In the seven years we’ve owned it I have built the interior and completed the exterior and it is now quite comfortable.  Why not come up (over, down) for a visit?  We plan to spend more time there as things settle down here.  This summer we hope to put in a well (we’re on a spring now) and gas heat so that we can use the cabin during the whole year.

I’ve been bad about writing and I still owe a lot of people a reply to their Christmas letter!  Well, they say I’ll have more time…but Carola and I keep adding things to the “honey-do” list and I still want to do some writing, take a class or two, and play with old photographs and the new computer and scanner.

Connie (Wise, 1962) and I live in Yucca Valley where the massive fires are happening.  Just to let know that we are not in danger as the fires are a couple miles to the west of us.  Much destruction and loss of property, animals, vehicles, and some historic places.  Very sad.
